Study Trip

This year's study trip will be a visit to Elia's "Stevin project" on the coast of Belgium, where an upgrade of the electricity grid for renewables integration is getting implemented. Use this opportunity to learn more about this project on-site while networking with peers from the workshop.

The trip will take place on Friday, 23 October 2015 and is considered a full-day event. The sites to be visited are situated around 110km west of Brussels with a travel time of about 1.5 hours by bus.

Preliminary Program

09:00 Bus departure from the entrance of the Sheraton Brussels Airport Hotel to West-Flanders (coastal province in Belgium).
10:30 Arrival in West-Flanders and visit of the "Stevin project".

Through the Stevin project, Elia aims to upgrade the Belgian 380-kV grid between Zeebrugge and Zomergem (47 km). The high voltage line is essential for economic development and for integration and transportation of further decentralised energy production and offshore evolution in the Belgian North Sea. In a next phase, Stevin will also enable the planned interconnection with the high-voltage grid of the United Kingdom ("Nemo project").

12:30 Lunch at Ostend
14:00 In the harbour of Ostend we will visit the control centre of C-Power, the first operational offshore wind farm in Belgium. When visiting the visitor Centre of C-Power you are visiting the heart of a 325MW windfarm. The 54 5MW and 6,15MW turbines are constructed at 30 km from the coastline on the Thorntonbank in the North Sea. In this visit we will take you through the construction phase of those giants on the Thorntonbank and show you how the C-Power windfarm, as an operational company, is runned today.
Guest-speaker of C-Power: Marie-Christine Leys.
15:30 Bus ride back to Brussels
17:00/17:30 Arrival at the hotel/airport in Brussels
